How to compare colleges without relying on rankings

Rankings compress dozens of unrelated factors into one number, and the factors that matter to you are rarely the ones weighted most heavily. Here is a more reliable way to read the shortlist above.

Start with accreditation, because it is binary

Approval determines whether your degree is recognised for higher study, government roles and many employers. Check it first, because nothing else matters if this fails:

Verify approvals on the regulator's own site rather than the college brochure, and confirm they cover your specific programme and campus — approval is granted per programme, not blanket.

Read placement data properly

Figure quotedWhat it actually tells you
Highest packageOne student, often an outlier. Near-useless for planning.
Average packagePulled upward by a few high offers.
Median packageWhat a typical graduate can expect. The number worth asking for.
Percentage placedAsk what counts as "placed", and out of how many eligible students.
Recruiter listCheck whether those firms hired this year, and in what volume.

Cost is a range, not a fee figure

Tuition is the headline; the real number includes hostel, mess, transport, exam and caution deposits, and any mandatory laptop or kit. Work out the four-year or two-year total, then weigh it against the median salary above — that ratio, not prestige, determines how long the degree takes to pay for itself.

Things that only show up on campus

Talk to people who are not selling

Current students one or two years ahead of you give you a far more accurate picture than any counsellor or brochure. Ask them what they would change, what surprised them, and whether they would choose it again.
